My Story
So many friends and beloved colleagues were lost in the last few months, all with cancer and most killed by it alone. Someone close to me said that it seems like Cancer is Winning. This is partly why I am taking part in a Punishing Five Pain filled games of Torturous Road Hockey.
But the most personal reason for my doing this is that my partner and best pal, Adrian, was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer in the fall of 2010. Thanks to PMH and Toronto General, Adrian had surgery just before Christmas. And then he started recruiting for this Road Hockey Team.
Now Adrian might have been diagnosed in 2005 or in 2000 or maybe they might have found the cancer as early as 1995 but he never had a check up. And that is one more reason for the existence of this team--to help raise awareness about the vital importance of visiting a doctor to check out whatever is checkable.
As for me, aside from playing in the road with one or two other 7 year olds back in the late 60's on Hambly Avenue, where the ball kept rolling down the hill, I Have Never actually played Road Hockey. I do not wish to frighten my teammates and I am certainly not looking for sympathy. I am looking for Imagination, Belief, Anger, Love and Action, in the form of Donations for Cancer Research.
I am playing in honour of Carolyn, Jackie, Tracy, David,Paul, Maury, Graham, Pete and Gina, among others lost in the past year; and in memory of Pierre; and Sonya and Ted my grandparents, and George Truss; but mostly because Cancer dared to attack my best pal.
