Q: What is ROAD HOCKEY TO CONQUER CANCER?

Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer will be a Dawn-to-Dusk road hockey event, taking place on Saturday, October 1, 2011 in the parking lots at Ontario Place, overlooking beautiful Lake Ontario. Each team will play a minimum of five games through the course of an exciting day, and in-between, there will be food, beverages, live music, interactive games, massages and other things to keep participants engaged.

Q: Who can take part in ROAD HOCKEY TO CONQUER CANCER?

Anyone 16 or older can take part in this Dawn-to-Dusk Road Hockey event, which is open to both genders, and all skill levels are welcome.

Q: How much do I need to raise to play in ROAD HOCKEY TO CONQUER CANCER?

Ordinarily, each player is required to raise a minimum of $1,250 in order to participate in the event, but through the generous support of CP24 and Sportsnet Radio, The FAN 590, we are automatically crediting each player (registered prior to August 1st)with $250. A $250 Fundraising credit is also availalble to all newly registered players who receive at least one donation in August. There is a team minimum of $10,000, so if some members of the team are having more success than others, as long as your team reaches at least $10,000 in funds raised, each player will be able to participate on October 1. If your team hasn’t raised at least that amount by Game Day, players can make up the difference by self-pledging to reach the minimum, and then continue fundraising until December 31, 2011. All funds raised go towards cancer research at The Princess Margaret.

Q: Will players be able to customize the supplied Road Hockey To Conquer Cancer jerseys, i.e. change the colours, add our team name, etc.?

A Road Hockey To Conquer Cancer jersey is provided for each registered player and will be given to participants when they sign-in onsite. Teams will have the option of wearing the RHCC jersey provided or wearing their own team jersey. Teams are welcomed to supply their own jerseys provided they are uniform amongst players registered to that team. We encourage teams to be creative and add to their team spirit by supplying their own jerseys, complete with their team’s colour scheme, team name and their own logo.

Q: Is Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer a competitive tournament?

While there is no doubt that many teams and players will keep track of goals, wins and losses, this is not a competitive event. The idea is to ensure that everyone has an enjoyable day while raising money for cancer research. The real winner in Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer is The Princess Margaret. Doctors and researchers will receive funding for critical cancer research because of the efforts of participants. There will be trophies awarded for the top fundraising team, the top fundraising company and the top fundraising individual.

Q: The team I’m putting together for Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer is comprised of a lot of players who haven’t played much hockey. Is our team going to be embarrassed?

No one will be embarrassed in Road Hockey To Conquer Cancer. First off, the point of the event is to have fun while raising money for critical cancer research at The Princess Margaret. But to make certain that the games are enjoyable, the teams will be separated into divisions. While we will have to wait until registrations have concluded before we create the divisions, please know that there will be divisions based on ability (for example, an elite division and a rookie division), sex (male-only, co-ed, female-only) and occupation (divisions by sector, for example, competition between teams from the financial sector).

Q: Tell me more about Princess Margaret Hospital. 

PrincessMargaretHospital and its research arm, the Ontario Cancer Institute, which includes The Campbell Family Cancer Research Institute and The Campbell Family Breast Cancer Research Institute, have achieved an international reputation as one of the top 5 cancer research centres in the world. PrincessMargaretHospital (PMH) is a member of University Health Network (UHN), which also includes Toronto GeneralHospital and TorontoWesternHospital. Q: What is the role of The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation?

The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation (PMHF) at UHN raises funds for breakthrough research, exemplary teaching and compassionate care at The Princess Margaret and its research arm, the Ontario Cancer Institute (OCI), which now includes The Campbell Family Cancer Research Institute and The Campbell Family Breast Cancer Research Institute. Q: When are we going to eat? Are vegetarian options available?

No need to pack a lunch, or any other meal for that matter. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will all be provided for participants. Vegetarian options are available at each meal. If you want to discuss meals at the event, please contact the Road Hockey To Conquer Cancer office.
