Training

Q: Do I really need to train to play in the ROAD HOCKEY TO CONQUER CANCER event?

In a word: YES. Your team can expect to play a minimum of five games throughout the day, which will amount to 150+ minutes of hockey. By comparison, an average NHLer can expect to play roughly 14 minutes per game. Assuming you have two sets of lines in the 3-on-3 format, you can expect to play 20 minutes per game, or roughly 100 MINUTES OF HOCKEY THAT DAY!! And don’t forget, there is no coasting in road hockey!

Q: What are some good exercises I can do on my own to prepare?

Here are a few good tips:

Cardio and Agility Training

Get the ol’ ticker ready for a day of fast action and fun! And make sure you can handle the constant stops, starts and jumping for joy after you snipe the game winner.

Stretching

That’s right…S-T-R-E-T-C-H-I-N-G (and reaching across the table for the last chicken wing and/or bending down to tie your shoes doesn’t count here). This is the real deal folks. We know that stretching is not something hockey players are known for, but this program is essential for helping you avoid injury…and being able to walk up the stairs the next day.

Does what I eat prior to the event make a difference?

It certainly does! Your body needs fuel to run at top speeds and to ensure your best performance. Here are some tips to help you out:

Nutrition

Give yourself a bit of an edge by shaking-up your diet heading into October 1st. The added benefit of training and watching your diet leading up to this event is getting in better shape.

Eat lots of carbohydrates the night before the event.

Make sure you are replenishing your calories throughout the day to ensure you keep your energy up. On GAME DAY you can enjoy the great Hockey food that will be provided.

Hydration

Contrary to popular belief, a few beers after the game does not constitute a "rehydration strategy."To that end, we offer a few tips to ensure you replace lost fluids and don’t run out of gas before the final horn sounds.

Q: I just registered, is it too late to begin training?

It’s never too late to start training for a spectacular event and a meaningful cause. If you play a few times a week and cross-train with a few other cardio activities you should be well on your way.
