Q: How much do I need to raise to play in ROAD HOCKEY TO CONQUER CANCER?

You’re team is required to raise a minimum of $10,000 in order to participate in the event. If your team hasn’t raised that amount by  Aug 15,  2012, you can donate the difference by self-pledging to reach the minimum, and then continue fundraising until December 31, 2012 All funds raised go towards cancer research at The Princess Margaret and Canadian Cancer Society.

Important Fundraising Rules:

1. To be eligible, teams of 8-12 players will raise a combined minimum of $10,000 through corporate and/or individual donations to play in Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer (RHCC).

2. If a team has raised at least $10,000 but has less than 8 players, RHCC reserves the right to add players up to the maximum 12 players per team, as long as those additional players have achieved the individual minimum of $1000 raised.

3. If a team of 8-12 players has not achieved the minimum $10,000 fundraising, there are two options: a. One person on the team can volunteer to do a Delayed Pledge on behalf of the entire team b. Each player on that team will be given the option to do a Delayed Pledge to get their personal fundraising minimum up to the individual minimum of $1000. (the DP amount will be slightly smaller for teams that have 9 or 10 eligible players)

4. If a team of less than 8 players has raised less than $10,000, then each player on that team will be given the option to do a Delayed Pledge to get their personal fundraising minimum up to the individual minimum of $1000.

a. One person on the team can volunteer to do a Delayed Pledge on behalf of each team member to ensure each participant achieves the $1000 minimum.

b. RHCC reserves the right to place additional players on the team who have also achieved the individual $1000 minimum fundraised.

Q: What is the Priority Cancer Discovery Fund?

If conquering cancer is your cause, the Priority Cancer Discovery Fund has been set up to allow the medical heads of The Campbell Family Institute and Princess Margaret Hospital to channel funds to the most promising programs our researchers and clinicians are working on. These programs focus on discoveries and improving cancer care. These are often cross cancer type of programs or platforms that will benefit all cancers.

Q: I lost my father to prostate cancer and would like my fundraising to be allocated to that cancer site. Is that possible?

Players with a preference for designating their fundraising to a particular cancer site are able to so. These selections are available to you when you register. Note: The choice is made during registration and cannot be changed once donations begin arriving

Q: Where does the money from ROAD HOCKEY TO CONQUER CANCER GO?

Funds raised by ROAD HOCKEY TO CONQUER CANCER are directed to cancer research and new therapeutic programs, as determined by the research and clinical staff leaders.

Research: The scientists and staff at The Campbell Family Institute at The Princess Margaret are continually searching for scientific discoveries that will lead to treatment breakthroughs in cancer. The Princess Margaret is a world leader in cancer stem cell research, immunotherapy, image-guided therapeutics and other initiatives that span all cancer types.

Q: Why do you need to keep raising money for cancer research? Millions have been spent on cancer research and yet we haven’t found a cure.

Thirty years ago, we didn’t really know what cancer was or how to effectively treat it. Today, thanks to research like that going on at The Campbell Family Institute at The Princess Margaret, we now know that there are over 200 types of cancer, and that each type is very different from the others. Today, thanks to research, we have effective screening and treatment for many types of cancer. If Terry Fox were to be diagnosed today, he would be much less likely to lose his leg to cancer and he could live to continue the fight.

Research is costly and takes a very long time. For example, Herceptin, a drug that was developed at UCLA that benefits patients with one particular sub-type of breast cancer, took more than 10 years to develop and test, and at a cost of well over $200 million and much more to commercialize. More breakthroughs of this kind will be discovered, but we won’t get there without ongoing funding. The Princess Margaret has a world-class research team in place, however, we need ongoing funding, like that from ROAD HOCKEY TO CONQUER CANCER, to continue to invest in research and maintain our momentum of discovery.

Q: How much money raised by ROAD HOCKEY TO CONQUER CANCER goes to the cause?

100% of all donations go directly to The Princess Margaret Foundation. From that expenses (marketing , operations and logistics) are paid. Net proceeds from the event stay in our province and help deliver breakthrough research and clinical enhancements at The Princess Margaret, one of the top 5 cancer research centres in the world.

Q: What is the return to The Foundation for ROAD HOCKEY TO CONQUER CANCER? How much of the money that is raised goes to run the event?

Historically, events of the magnitude of ROAD HOCKEY TO CONQUER CANCER return approximately 65% to cancer research. That means 65 cents of each dollar raised goes directly to cancer research and programs. This is higher than the guidelines set out by the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy, which suggests 50% as an acceptable guideline for events of this size.

We strive to maximize the return to The Foundation. We have a volunteer board of directors comprised of many prominent business and healthcare leaders. The Foundation board approved the budget for RHCC and ensures the event is properly managed and expenses are closely monitored.
